Our History

The current sanctuary is the third church to be built on this site. The first was a wooden barn-like structure with an 85 foot steeple. It was opened in June 1842. The original wooden church was moved on rollers, pulled by a large team of horses to the present site of the Church of the Redeemer at the north east corner of Bloor and Avenue Road.

As a result of rapid growing congregation, it became necessary to build the second church (1860), which now stands immediately to the west of the present church (1913). After renovations were completed in 2006, the 1860 church now houses The Great Hall, St. Paul’s Chapel as well as the administration offices.

In the early 1990’s St. Paul’s Bloor Street began a major renovation and restoration project which was completed in 2006. In addition to restoring the existing buildings encompassing some 65,000 square feet, 45,000 square feet of new space was added, including the Atrium which now connects the three historic buildings into one cohesive facility.
